I am a shorts-wearing creative who likes working with technology and loves to travel. My company name and logo say it all: a hiker who uses a pencil as a walking stick and carries a computer as his backpack. I also love helping people, teaching kids, going on mission trips, riding my bike, and hanging out with my cats.
I have a scanner personality type, A scanner, which is a term coined by the author Barbara Sher, describes people who love to learn and do different things…at the same time. For scanners, learning and figuring out how something works is the reward. Once I know how to do something, I want to move on and learn something else.
Typical of most scanners, I’ve held a lot of different jobs and worked at a lot of different companies. I started my career doing IT support and programming, I then moved into technical writing, then video production, teaching, instructional design, photography, and graphic design.
On the bad side, I get bored easily. On the good side, I thrive in environments where there is a lot of work to do but not enough people. I do especially well at startups and companies going through a reorg.
I once worked for an organization that made mobile workstation carts for hospitals and clinics. I was initially hired to write their product user manuals. Then I was asked to help with the production of the training and marketing videos. While I was doing that I was also asked to art direct their product photography photo shoots. And when the company decided to spin this unit off into a separate company, I was asked to find and hire an agency to help this new company define its branding strategy.
